#PlayEveryDay

Urban Initiatives once again partnered with Chicago Cubs Charities, running its third year of sports summer camps at four schools in Chicago: Jahn Elementary in Hamlin Park, Beidler Elementary in East Garfield Park, National Teachers Academy in South Loop, and Lloyd Elementary in Belmont-Cragin. Once a week, the Cubs on the Move Fitness Trolley visits each of these camp sites to engage kids and coaches to play games, exercise, and learn about healthy living.

Student excitement is high as the Fitness Trolley arrives at camp, bringing with them new games, such as Bucket Ball, and interactive discussions about nutrition and physical activity. The Cubs have chosen activities for students to increase physical fitness and practice new skills. In true Cubs sprit, each camper also practices their baseball skills through batting practice and base running.

Each camp session is not only filled with fun and exciting games, but students are also encouraged to continue these healthy habits at home. The campers received Cubs on the Move fitness logs, which help students to track their physical activity each week, encouraging them to follow the “Play Every Day!” motto. Students also receive a healthy snack and water while having the chance to sit on the Trolley itself, which is a highlight for many campers.

During the final week of camp Cubs Rookie Catcher Kyle Schwarber came out to Jahn and surprised summer campers. Kyle warmed up with the kids and even stepped out of his role as a Catcher and worked the Pitcher’s Mound for a little whiffle ball. Kids had a blast as they can now say they batted against a Major League Baseball Player.

Thanks to the Chicago Cubs for helping our campers have fun and stay healthy during the summer months!
