UI’s Newest Work to Play Schools

Urban Initiatives is happy to share with you an update from our three newest Work to Play Schools!

Mahalia Jackson Elementary:

Jackson is the Work to Play Team and Urban Initiatives’  41st partner school. In the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, the Jackson WTP team is excited to join the UI soccer family. Jackson participants, like Tayshaun and Marqise have already started changing their eating habits; swapping out gatorade sports drinks for water during practice. Comprised of 25 eager students grades 2nd – 4th the Jackson WTP team is gearing up and practicing hard for their first game day in early April.

Stevenson Elementary School:

The Stevenson Eagles are a serious group of 2nd through 4th grade soccer players. While they are always ready for a good competition, they are also proud to say what really makes their team special is that they respect each other. This team is not shy of talent or spirit lead by the incredible Coach Lira. The team wraps up each practice with two chants: one for the Eagles and one for the team favorite, BARCELONA!

Barry Elementary School
Barry’s WTP kids live and breathe soccer! There is some amazing natural talent on this team and already a handful of great leaders standing out! This team is a healthy mix of 2nd through 4th graders but you wouldn’t be able to tell once they get on that field and let loose! We are only 2 weeks into this season and Coach Vargas has done an impeccable job Of instilling a sense of Community and Culture.
As they say at practice :
ONE TEAM.
ONE SCHOOL.
ONE COMMUNITY.
BARRY, BARRY, BARRY!!
