This summer UI continued its partnership with chicago Cubs charities by running its second year of summer of sports summer camps at four cps schools lloyd elementary in belmont-craigin, kozminski elementary iN HYde Park, gunsaulus Scholastic academy in brighton Park and BEIDler Elementary in garfield park. throughout July students came together every day to play games, exercise and discuss healthY living.
Ensuring that our students are able to play safely during the Chicago summer months, Urban Initiatives coaches utilized school play spaces to lead activities that promoted physical activity but also stressed the importance of staying hydrated. Campers learned new games, like Octopus tag and Water Relay Races that they are eager to play with friends when school starts again. Take the Lead Team Captains as well as UI high school interns were instrumental in getting many of the younger campers to trade in their summer of video games for a summer full of running around, playing games and making new friends!
At Gunsaulus Academy, campers got their parents involved by hosting end-of-camp potluck celebration. Parents brought healthy snacks and drinks, and the campers taught them how to play games like Junk Food Tag, Cat and Mouse, and Dog Catcher. The day ended with a parents vs. kids soccer game.
Although camp has ended, the fun doesn’t stop! In the next few weeks campers and their families will be going to see the Chicago Red Stars play a professional soccer game, participating in the Bud Billiken Day Parade, and hanging out at Wrigley Field for a Cubs game. Thank you to the Cubs and all our UI families for another successful summer of camps!
