What was your favorite summer camp moment growing up?
We asked our middle school captains that very question during this month’s 3rd annual trip to Camp Manitowa – and their answers were as heartwarming as they were unique.
For one student, it was the magic of swimming in a pool for the very first time. Others couldn’t stop smiling about late-night cabin rehearsals for the talent show, where new friendships blossomed between students from schools all across Chicago.
And then there was the high ropes course – a camp favorite. At first, it was “really scary,” according to many campers, but with each climb, they grew bolder, tried new routes, and ended their adventures soaring across camp on the scenic zip line.
This year, nine middle school captains – nominated by their coaches – joined the adventure, alongside four college interns. Several of these interns have been part of the Urban Initiatives team since elementary school, living proof of the positive, long-term impact our programs have on Chicago youth.
This unforgettable week wouldn’t have happened without our incredible partner, Camp Out for Kids, who has been making our summer camp dreams come true since 2014. We’re grateful to have partners who know just how important outdoor play is for kids in the summertime.
Here’s to more first swims, fearless climbs, and friendships that last long after the campfire burns out.
