This summer, Chicago’s playgrounds, fields, and gyms were alive with the sounds of bouncing balls, cheers, and laughter – thanks to Urban Initiatives’ free programs that brought sports, creativity, and community to hundreds of kids.
With Camp Out for Kids’ generous support, at 18 school sites across the city, our 4-week sport sampling camp gave young athletes the chance to try something new. From the footwork of soccer to the swing of a baseball bat, from basketball dribbles to hockey shots and volleyball serves – kids built skills, confidence, and friendships with every game. A special thank you to the Chicago Stars FC, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cubs for their partnership this summer!
But the magic of camp didn’t just come from the activities – it came from the people leading them. Many of our assistant coaches were Chicago Summer Interns who have been part of Urban Initiatives for over a decade, first joining us as elementary school players. Now in high school and college, they stepped into leadership roles, guiding the next generation with the same encouragement and energy they once received from their own UI coaches. Watching them run warm-ups, teach drills, and celebrate small victories was a full-circle moment for our whole community.

Meanwhile, another 520 students spent their days in our Out-of-School-Time programs, diving into academics, arts and crafts, cooking, sports, and more. These programs prove that play and learning go hand in hand – and that summer can be a season for both personal growth and joyful connection.
From first-time campers discovering their favorite sport to seasoned UI alumni returning as mentors, this summer was a celebration of what’s possible when kids have access to caring coaches, supportive peers, and opportunities to lead.
