Last Thursday, April 23rd, members of the Urban Initiatives (UI) team had the opportunity to join partners, advocates, and community leaders from across Chicago at the Laureus Town Hall, hosted at the historic Garfield Park Field House. The space itself, rooted in community and connection, set the tone for a day grounded in shared purpose and collective action around the power of sport and play.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this gathering was about more than just updates; it was about collective momentum. The Town Hall brought together a diverse network of youth sports advocates, each committed to advancing play equity and ensuring that all young people have access to safe, joyful, and developmentally rich sport experiences.
Building Connections That Matter
One of the most valuable aspects of the Town Hall was the opportunity to deepen relationships and build new ones. We connected with fellow practitioners, funders, and community leaders who are all working toward a shared vision. These conversations reminded us that while our approaches may differ, our goals are aligned, and collaboration is key to scaling impact.
Learning and Sharing Across the Network
We appreciated hearing updates from Laureus USA and the broader Sport for Good Chicago coalition, which continue to push the field forward through systems-level thinking and investment in community-driven solutions. Just as important was the chance to offer feedback, ensuring that the voices of those closest to the work help shape future programming and strategy.
Diving Into What Matters Most
A highlight of the day was breaking into small groups for focused, collaborative discussions. Each conversation centered on a critical question facing our field:
- Activating Public Spaces Through Sport and Play
How do we make Chicago the best place to play? This discussion sparked ideas around reimagining parks, schoolyards, and neighborhood spaces as hubs for safe and accessible play. - Engaging Girls in Sport
How do we ensure girls have everything they need to continue playing the sports they love? Participants shared strategies for creating inclusive environments, addressing barriers, and amplifying girls’ voices in program design. - Supporting and Developing Our Coaches
How do we fuel, sustain, and develop the heart of this work? This conversation resonated deeply with our team, reinforcing the importance of investing in coaches not just as instructors, but as mentors and community leaders. - Raising Awareness on the Power and Impact of Youth Sports
How do we make play equity matter to the entire city? Together, we explored ways to elevate storytelling, data, and advocacy to broaden public understanding and support.
Turning Conversation Into Action
We left the Town Hall energized, not just by the ideas shared, but by the clear next steps and opportunities for engagement. Whether it’s deepening partnerships, piloting new approaches, or amplifying the message of play equity, the path forward feels both tangible and collective.
At UI, we believe that sport is a powerful vehicle for youth development and community building. Convenings like the Laureus Town Hall remind us that we are part of a larger movement, one that is strongest when we learn from one another, challenge each other, and move forward together.
We’re grateful to have been part of this conversation and look forward to continuing the work alongside this incredible network.
