When most people think of boxing, they imagine a sport of punches and speed but at The Bloc, it’s so much more. It’s a place where middle school students discover confidence, friendship, and the power of perseverance.
The Bloc program is currently offered at Piccolo Elementary School through a partnership with Urban Initiatives. Middle school students are actively enrolled, and participation has been strong, with consistent full attendance during sessions.
The program focuses on building discipline, self-control, resilience, and teamwork. Through boxing training and mentorship, students learn how to manage their emotions, set personal goals, and grow into the best versions of themselves both inside and outside of the program.
Students who may not typically engage in traditional programs are finding a sense of belonging through boxing. The structure and mentorship provided by The Bloc help students build confidence, improve behavior, and develop positive coping skills.
One student, who primarily speaks Spanish, shared his experience when asked, “¿Cómo te fue hoy?” He responded, “Muy bien, siempre me divierto e hice nuevos amigos que ahora les hablo durante el día.” This reflects the program’s ability to create meaningful connections and a positive space where students feel comfortable, included, and excited to participate.
Programs like The Bloc are essential in creating safe and supportive spaces for youth. By meeting students where they are and engaging them through hands-on activities, the program helps redirect energy in a positive way and strengthens the school community.
The Bloc continues to make a meaningful impact at Piccolo, empowering students to grow, connect, and succeed.
