This summer, Urban Initiatives teamed up with Microsoft for the third year to offer The Circuit—a one-of-a-kind program blending the power of sport with cutting-edge technology training. Over multiple weeks, youth rotated through stations pairing sports-based teamwork and leadership activities led by UI with Microsoft-led technical skill development.
While UI built transferable skills like communication, problem-solving, collaboration, and perseverance, Microsoft provided access to industry-recognized credentials in high-demand fields, including Career Essentials in Generative AI, Fundamentals of Prompt Engineering, and Cybersecurity Fundamentals. Together, these experiences equipped participants with both the interpersonal and technical skills to thrive in school, work, and life.
The program concluded with a culminating event where the Circuiters presented their final projects to representatives from the Chicago Bulls organization. Urban Initiatives prepared participants through improvisation games and activities that built self-confidence and presentation skills. One participant shared, “I learned how to deal with stress and gain confidence.”
The Circuit helped youth see how the skills they use on the field, such as strategy, focus, and adaptability, translate into careers in technology and innovation.
Microsoft volunteers brought these lessons to life, sharing real-world applications and inspiring young people to envision themselves in future-ready roles.
A big thank-you to Microsoft for their partnership, generosity, and belief in the potential of Chicago’s youth. Together, we’re building a future where every child has access to the tools, experiences, and credentials they need to lead on the field, in their community, and in the careers of tomorrow.
