Our Indoor Recess Playbook

In Chicago, a drop in temperature usually means the “indoor recess” scramble. But at Urban Initiatives, we don’t see winter as a break from play; we see it as a season to deepen our impact. While the world outside freezes, our schools stay active with a research-based approach to movement and connection.

We are taking play seriously by turning every classroom, gym, and multipurpose room into a hub of active social-emotional learning (SEL).

The Indoor “Game Plan”

Indoor recess at a UI school isn’t about “keeping kids busy” in a cramped space. It is a structured environment where routines and relationships take center stage:

  • Safety Through Routine: Our coaches use fun attention-getters and verbal and nonverbal cues to keep energy high but controlled. By reinforcing daily rules since day one of the school year – like safe play expectations and no play-fighting – we build a foundation of physical and emotional safety.
  • Proactive Management: Our coaches don’t wait for issues to escalate. At the very start of each period, they address specific expectations with students to set a clear tone for the session. Because our coaches are an integrated part of the school staff team, they connect with key colleagues – like administrators or deans- well in advance. This collaboration ensures every group has the necessary support and a warm, supervised environment before play even begins.
  • The “Pivot” Prep: To avoid last-minute stress when the weather turns, our coaches prepare lesson plans with games that work both indoors and out. Having at least three “go-to” games ready at all times ensures that if a new activity isn’t clicking or if time is tight, the play never stops. This proactive planning means coaches don’t have to scramble when the clouds roll in – they just switch to the indoor plan they already have on paper.

Adapting the Curriculum

Taking play seriously means making the most of whatever space we have. Our teams regularly huddle to figure out how to bring outdoor favorites inside without losing the fun. Whether it’s a game that helps younger kids practice moving safely in a classroom, high-energy activities for 3rd and 4th graders in a multipurpose room, or strategy-based games for the older students, we make sure every activity fits the age and the room. By picking games that work perfectly indoors, our coaches ensure students keep building social skills and staying active, even when the weather keeps us off the blacktop.

Leading with Initiative

As we move from setting foundations to optimizing our play, students take more ownership. We use feedback from students and teachers to adjust games, ensuring indoor play remains inclusive and varied. Whether we are on the blacktop or in a basement gym, we are proving that structured play is a year-round necessity.
