Urban Initiatives is proud to continue our Coach Apprenticeship Program for the second summer in a row! This program is an opportunity designed specifically for youth ages 16-24 who may be disengaged from traditional school or employment. This program provides hands-on experience in youth development, leadership, and coaching while empowering participants to serve their own communities.
This year, we’re especially excited to share our deepening commitment to North Lawndale, where local leaders are gaining skills that will strengthen the neighborhood for years to come.
With generous support from The Steans Family Foundation, our apprentices received training in coaching fundamentals, youth engagement, and social-emotional learning. They work alongside experienced UI staff to lead sports-based programming, engage younger participants, and create safe, inclusive spaces for play.
This summer, our apprentices stepped into leadership at Community Play Days in North Lawndale – expanding sport access in their own neighborhood. These events introduced community members to new sports, connected them to local athletic assets, and offered opportunities to get involved year-round. Apprentices also made warm referrals to local organizations, helping neighbors access various resources, services, and programs to fit their needs.
A special thank you goes to UCAN for being an incredible partner and helping us connect with talented, passionate young people from North Lawndale who are ready to step into leadership roles.
