Urban Initiatives programs might start with a ball and a whistle, but they are built to develop leaders. Our student captains learn early on that the skills they use to manage a game – communication, teamwork, and resilience – are the same ones that drive success in Chicago’s professional world.
Earlier this month, that leadership pipeline led two middle school captains from Avondale Logandale to the offices of Shore Capital Partners. This visit was designed to bridge the gap between school-based team dynamics and the professional world, giving our students a firsthand look at where their potential can take them.
The View from the Top
The afternoon began with a tour of the Shore Capital offices, and it was impossible not to be inspired by the incredible views of the city. For our captains, seeing Chicago from this perspective was a powerful reminder of the scale of the professional landscape and their place within it.
We are incredibly grateful to the team at Shore Capital for opening their doors and providing a transparent look into how their business operates. It wasn’t just about the office space; it was about showing our students that these environments are accessible to them.
Redefining the “Learning Leader”
At the heart of the visit was a deep dive into the concept of leadership. We spent time discussing what it means to be a learning leader. In the UI playbook, a leader isn’t someone who has to have all the answers; a leader is someone who is willing to listen, ask questions, and grow alongside their team.
Our captains discussed how admitting when you are still learning actually makes a team stronger. It creates a safe environment where everyone feels comfortable taking risks and trying new things. Whether they are navigating a complex game at Avondale Logandale or a business deal at a firm like Shore Capital, leadership is about the hard work of practice and the willingness to improve together.
The Bottom Line
We are not just teaching kids how to play; we are showing them that the leadership they practice at school is a universal language. By the time we left Shore Capital, our captains didn’t just see a high-rise office – they saw a space where their skills and their voices belong.
Special thanks to the team at Shore Capital Partners, especially our Partner’s Board member Matt Matosian, for an unforgettable afternoon and for investing in the next generation of Chicago’s leaders.
