Data-Driven Insight: SEL as an Academic Intervention

A new meta-analysis published in Review of Educational Research analyzed 40 studies with more than 33,700 students in grades 1–12 and found that students who participated in universal Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs performed significantly better academically, including higher grades and improved standardized test scores, than those who did not.

The study, linked here, showed that programs lasting more than one semester (like Urban Initiatives’) were consistently associated with measurable academic gains. The strongest outcomes were seen in elementary school, where SEL instruction most directly supports foundational learning in literacy and math. Programs integrated for all students helped advance both achievement and equity, underscoring SEL as a universal lever for success.

As lead author Cheyeon Ha noted, “We now have rigorous scientific evidence that SEL improves both student well-being and academic achievement.”

Implication for Urban Initiatives
This reinforces what we see every day in our schools: SEL skills and connection drive learning. When students feel seen, supported, and part of a team, they show higher attendance, deeper engagement, and stronger academic outcomes.

UI’s programs are described by our participants as so much more than play. They’re spaces to learn teamwork, build friendships, manage emotions, and stay motivated. Many directly connect fun and belonging to learning and improvement. As one participant put it, “It is fun and helps me learn better.”

Principals across partner schools share similar observations:

“The [Urban Initiatives] program has had a strong impact in my students’ motivation and interest in school. They love to stay after school for this activity because they feel they belong and have connection to the instructors and each other.”

“Overall, the [Urban Initiatives] program has improved the behavior and the attitude towards school for my students. It has contributed to our efforts to improve student attendance and engagement.”

“We have noticed an increase in attendance for our Pre-K students who participate in the [Urban Initiatives] program.”

SEL is an academic intervention that builds the human foundation for learning. By embedding social-emotional development and connection into every practice, huddle, and classroom, Urban Initiatives is advancing both the well-being and academic success of Chicago’s youth.
