Building a Stronger Chicago, One Connection at a Time: Celebrating the 2026 Connection Cup

On Saturday, October 3, Urban Initiatives brought together young people and families from across Chicago for our annual Connection Cup at Midway Plaisance. What started as a day of soccer quickly became something bigger: an opportunity for students from different schools, neighborhoods, and communities to come together, build friendships, and celebrate everything they have in common.

This year’s Connection Cup welcomed 140 students, exceeding our participation goal by 40%! More than 50 family members and over 10 volunteers joined the celebration, bringing together more than 200 members of the Urban Initiatives community for a day filled with soccer, creativity, and connection.

Throughout the day, students took to the field to play alongside peers they might not otherwise have the opportunity to meet. Between soccer games, students participated in creative activities, shared laughs, and enjoyed the excitement of being part of something bigger than their individual school communities.

For many young people, their experiences are often shaped by the neighborhoods where they live and the schools they attend. In a city as large and diverse as Chicago, opportunities to connect with peers from other communities can be limited. Events like the Connection Cup help bridge those gaps, creating welcoming spaces where students can discover shared interests, develop new relationships, and experience the power of play to bring people together.

And the connections didn’t stop with the students. With more than 50 family members in attendance, the Connection Cup also provided an opportunity for parents and caregivers to come together, cheer on their young people, and connect with other families from across the city. Their presence helped create a supportive environment that celebrated not only the students on the field but also the larger community surrounding them.

At Urban Initiatives, we believe sport and play have the power to strengthen communities. The Connection Cup brings that belief to life by creating intentional opportunities for young people to practice teamwork, embrace differences, and build a sense of belonging. These are experiences that extend far beyond the soccer field, helping students develop the relationships and skills that will support them in their schools, neighborhoods, and futures.

The Connection Cup reminds us that building a more connected Chicago doesn’t always require something extraordinary. Sometimes, it starts with a soccer ball, a new friendship, and the simple joy of playing together.

A special thank you to our dedicated coaches, school partners, volunteers, and families who helped make this year’s Connection Cup possible. Your enthusiasm and support continue to make these moments of connection possible for young people across Chicago.
