What happens when you bring families into the kitchen with a professional chef? Magic – and a lot of delicious food! As part of the Community Schools Initiative (CSI) Program at Faraday Elementary in East Garfield Park, we recently partnered with Common Threads to host the Family Cook Class. This initiative is a key part of our ongoing effort to engage parents and build a stronger, healthier school community.
The mission was simple: empower parents and students to cook affordable, nutritious meals together while honoring their favorite culinary traditions. Throughout the session, families mastered cost-saving techniques and healthy ingredient swaps, proving that “healthy” and “flavorful” belong on the same plate.
More Than Just a Recipe
The energy in the room was electric. It was truly inspiring to watch families step outside their comfort zones, confidently chopping broccoli and sautéing onions side-by-side. Beyond the skills learned, the class created a dedicated space for undistracted connection, allowing parents and children to bond away from the busyness of daily life.
The highlight of the day? One student was so impressed with the meal he prepared that he eagerly asked for the recipe to make it again. The look of pure joy on his face when he realized his family was going home with their very own Common Threads cookbook was unforgettable.
By the end of the class, our Faraday families didn’t just leave with full stomachs – they left with the tools and inspiration to keep the tradition of healthy cooking alive at home.
