The Urban Initiatives Work to Play Cup is our annual celebration of Urban Initiatives’ program participants and their achievements during the school year. The 5th Anniversary Work to Play Cup Presented by Target drew over 2,000 people, including 1,300 K-4th grade children; over 200 5th-8th grade Team Captains; players’ families representing 41 Chicago Public Schools.
Urban Initiatives students will gathered at the Midway Plaisance on the University of Chicago campus for a day filled with fun, community-building, and games. The event brought together children and families from Englewood, Little Village, North Lawndale, Austin, and 27 other Chicago communities, as well as the larger Chicagoland area.
The Work to Play Cup showcased Urban Initiatives’ innovative Work to Play and Take the Lead programs, which use participation on a school soccer team to motivate children to adopt healthy lifestyles, develop stronger character, reach higher academic achievement, and form the leadership skills they will need to be lifetime supporters of their neighborhoods and communities.
The M.V.P. (Most Valuable Partner) Award was presented to William Blair for their commitment to enriching lives, advancing health and wellness, and strengthening Chicago communities. Longtime Urban Initiatives supporters and Chicago philanthropists the Girgenti Family was awarded the Community Impact Award for their commitment to families and students across Chicago.
Urban Initiatives would like to thank all of our amazing sponsors that made this day possible! A special thank you goes out to Target, Aramark, Chicago Park District, and William Blair. Save the Date for the 6th Annual Work to Play Cup on Saturday, June 2, 2018!
